The Turkish Historical Society Archives comprises collections of documents, photographs, periodicals, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the late Ottoman Empire (1876-1922) and the Republican Era of Turkey.

The collections were acquired through purchases or donations made to our institution by the original owners or their heirs. The majority of the documents are written in Ottoman Turkish.

The collections also include documents written in widely used foreign languages such as English, French, and German.

The document collections feature personal notes, correspondences, and records from individuals who purchased or donated the materials, as well as communications from the institutions and organizations with which they were affiliated.

The photographic collections encompass images of Ottoman and Turkish Republic statesmen, as well as Turkish and foreign writers, historians, and artists, city photographs from both domestic and international locations. Additionally, there exists a substantial collection of photographs of Atatürk.

The Historical Archive of the Institution comprises collections such as Tevfik Bıyıklıoğlu, Osman Ferit Sağlam, Uluğ İğdemir, Tevfik Paşa, Kazım Orbay, Enver Paşa, Süheyl Ünver, İsmet İnönü, Halil Ethem Eldem, Fahir İz and Hamit Zübeyir Koşay.

When Turkish citizens apply with their ID cards and foreigners with their passports during weekday working hours:

  • Catalogue scanning is permitted for documents that have completed their storage period, have been classified, and have had their classification information entered into the catalog system.
  • After identifying document codes from summaries available in the catalog system, either online or in-person, researchers may request these documents from the archive unit.
  • Documents that have been transferred to the digital system,are provided on CD.
  • The original documents that have not been transferred to the digital system are counted and delivered to the researcher for his/her work (in the researcher’s cabins) in exchange for signature by filling out the Annex 1 form of the Regulation on State Archive Services. The researcher can take photographs from the documents delivered to him/her. When he/she finishes his/her work, the last part of the same form is filled out, counted and received in return for signature.
  • A fee of 50 kuruş is assessed for each document or photographic image obtained from the digital system or for photographs taken of original documents.
